How to Paint: Tips for a Perfect Paint Job

Anyone can paint a room, right? But not everyone knows the secrets to paint a room well. Check out these basic tips for a flawless finish and faster cleanup.

Set up a staging area

Gather all the tools for the entire project

Any painting project begins with setting up a work area. As you think through the entire project, gather all the tools and supplies you’ll need outside the room. All the gear will be out of your way but within easy reach. And you won’t be tripping over it, constantly moving it or hunting for it during the job.

Prime every patch

Apply primer by dabbing it against the wall

Your car has been repaired, and now you’re ready to paint, right? Nope! Prime every patch, no matter how small. Paint will absorb into the unprimed patches and create dull spots (known as “flashing”). Avoid brushing on primer. It will show brush marks through the paint coat. Stipple it on instead by dabbing your brush against the wall. The bumpy texture will better match the texture of rolled-on paint.

Use canvas instead

It’s a good idea to use plastic sheets to protect woodwork or furniture, but not for floors. On carpet, they tend to slide around. Even worse, plastic promotes tracking. It’s because spills and drips sit on the surface and dry slowly, so you have plenty of time to step in the paint and track it around. On the other hand, fabric lets paint dry quickly both above and below. Drop cloths made of canvas work best, but old bed sheets can also be used.

Rolling paint on the ceiling showers you with a fine mist. A baseball cap is essential and safety glasses let you watch your work without squinting. To make skin cleanup easier, rub lotion on your face, arms and hands. At the end of the day, your paint freckles will wash right off.

Seal brushes in a freezer bag

If your “quick” painting job didn’t go as expected and you need an extra day, seal your brushes in a freezer bag. As long as it’s airtight, you can store brushes for up to a week without cleaning. Do not wait too long; they will dry out and stiffen, making cleanup that much more difficult.

Use slightly soapy water

Static electricity sticks dust, lint, and pet hair to walls. By rolling paint on the walls without cleaning them, they will be preserved for all to see Pompeii-style. Plus, paint adheres better to clean walls. Before painting, you should wipe down the walls with a damp sponge and warm water. Add a smidgen of dishwashing liquid to the water. Just a few drops of this soap will cut through oil and greasy fingerprints, without creating suds you’ll have to remove later.

Those labels on paint can lids are like the paint’s DNA. They contain all the information needed to duplicate the color and sheen.

Paint out of a bucket

Don’t use paint roller trays

Put an end to paint roller trays. It’s inconvenient and easy to kick them over or step on them. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with all of the paint you need for the entire room and stir it well. This ensures a consistent color throughout the room. Even if the color is the same at the paint store, the paint may look different if you switch gallons in the middle of a wall. Hang a $2 roller screen in the bucket to use with your paint roller.

Feather the edges

You can’t keep a wet edge when painting ceilings—they’re just too large—but you can minimize lap marks by feathering out the edges. Roll the nearly dry roller in different directions along the edge, feathering out the paint. Once you complete an entire length of the ceiling, move to the next section and paint over the feathered edge. If you need a second coat, apply the paint in the opposite direction.
